The Caged Bird
Paraphrasing
Stanza 1:
The poem begins with a striking image of a free bird who is flying with the wind. The wind carries along the free bird. The circumstances are favourable for the free bird. Then the bird glides smoothly along with the currents of the wind. This means that the bird is flying unrestrictedly and can enjoy the beauty of the sun. The free bird is bold enough to assert his rights over everything.
Stanza 2:
The second stanza shows the completely contrasting condition of caged bird. While the free bird lives in the circumstances that are in his favour and claim the entire sky as his own, the caged bird lives in a cage which is very narrow, confined and restricted. He can only move up and down in frustration in his confined area. Moreover the caged bird can’t see outside of his bars of cage, he can hardly see anything from the bars of rage. Trapped in the cage of these bars the caged bird can’t envisioned and dreamed the freedom. His wings and feet are confined so he opens his mouth for singing as it is the only thing he can do.
Stanza 3:
The caged bird is terribly fearful. But the bird still sings for the freedom and opportunity. He sings about the freedom that is denied to him and about the opportunity that he may not be offered at this point, but it does not stop him from desiring for it. Although he does not know about freedom but he still desire for it. These songs are heard on the far away hills.
Stanza 4:
The free bird having enjoyed flying in the breeze and beauty of sunset starts thinking of another breeze. It means he is thinking about new opportunity. So the free bird is able to explore the trade winds blowing from long distances. He is able to move to new places and experience new things. He has the freedom to find his own food. He can go as far as he likes. Everything is laid open to him. Only he has the right to the opportunities that the world has offer.
Stanza 5:
In contrast to the free bird the caged bird’s dreams are dead and he stands on their grave . It is the worst thing that can happen to anyone. Because if dream dies nothing left behinde. So his dream are dead and his existence are neglected so he becomes a shadow. The caged bird is no longer sure of his existence still he makes all his efforts to scream and cry loudly as he lives a life that is like a nightmare. His wings and feet are tight so he opens his mouth to sing the songs of freedom.
