Around the world in 80 days (Class 7th)

 Q#1: What makes Mr.Phileas Fogg a meticulous man? Cite some examples from the story to support your answer.

Ans#1:  Following instances from the novel proved that Philip Fogg was a meticulous man as he notices every minute detail: 

a) His bathing water had to be at 31 degree C -not 30 degree C and not 32degree C. He dismissed his butler for bringing him water that was two degrees too cold.

b) From now, 11:29 a.m. on 2 October 1872 , you are my servant.



Q#2: Why did Mr. Fogg make the bet? Why did the other members of the Reform Club agree to bet?

Ans#2: After learning in the Daily Telegraph that a new railroad in India has made it theoretically possible to travel around the world in 80 days, Mr Fogg betted his fellows. The other members of the Reform Club agreed to bet because the wager was for the huge sum of 20,000 pounds (half of his fortune) 


Q#3: How did Phileas Fogg finally win the bet?

Ans#3: Apparently, Mr Fogg lost the bet as he was five minutes late to win his wager but later they learnt that their journey through the time zones had gained them a day and that they were not late after all.


Q#4: How did they rescue Aouda from the suttee?

Ans#4: Passepartout disguised himself as the body of the late Rajah , and, as soon as the pyre was lit, he sprang up and seized the widow. The party then fled before the trick was discovered.

Ans#6: During this trip a lot of mishaps happened to Mr. Fogg and Passepartout. 

1. Detective Fix Interference:

From the very beginning Mr fix started chasing them and  interrupted them throughout their journey. This resulted in missed opportunity for Mr Fogg to complete his journey on time as on the arrival to Liverpool he arrested Mr. Fogg

2. Delay in India:

At Kholby village, they learnt that the road is 50 miles short of completion and passengers are required to find their own way to Allahabad to resume their train journey.

3: Attacked by Robbers:

In Nebraska the train was attacked by bandits resulting in loss of time and resources.

4: Delay in Hong Kong:

In Hong Kong when they secure cabins to Yokohama, they learnt that it's departure has been rescheduled to the evening and there Mr. Fix also drugged Passepartout. As a result they missed the steamer. 

Climax

The thrilling climax of the story is when Mr. Fogg just arrived in time to win his bet but Mr. Fix arrested him. Later he released him after knowing that someone else robbed the bank, Mr.Fogg reached London 5 minutes late to win his wager due to Fix interruption.

But the story took a turn and Passepartout came to know that they had gained a day due to travelling through time zones and therefore they are not late to win their wager. 

Q#7 What is the central idea of the story? 

The central idea of the given extract is how Fogg ultimately wins the bet even though there are unexpected delays and missed trains. The novel tells the story of the unflappable Phileas Fogg and his trip around the world in 80 days.He had unknowingly gained a day when crossing the International Date Line, and hence he was still in time to meet the deadline. The final statement is that love and its attainment is more important than all the challenges and money in the world.
