A Long Walk to Water

 a.What is the setting of the story?

The story took place in Southern Sudanese village in two different time periods.  The story alternates between two characters, the first part talks about Salva during a civil war in 1985 and the second storyline tells about Nya in between 2008 and 2009. 

b.Who helped Salva to get to the refugee camp in Kenya?

No one helped Salva to get to the refugee camp in Kenya. Infact he joined a group searching for water and food. From there they crossed the River Nile and reached Ethiopia. He stayed for six years in Ethiopia and then finally moved to Kenya. This was his own struggle, patience and determination that he finally reached Kenya.

c.Share the most Challenging aspect of Salva's life .

Slava faced a lot of challenges in his life. He got separated from his family. He remained in refugee camp where they had to survive without food and water for many days. He covered African continent on foot and kept on searching for his family. Losing a family is the most challenging aspect of Salva's life.

d. When did Salva's "long walk" start in the story?

Salva's "Long Walk" started in the story when he got separated from his family. In the beginning he stayed with an elderly woman but due to lack a f water and food he left her and joined a group of village residents in the hope to find a refugee camp where he will be safe. 

e. How would you feel living in a camp? 

I think living in a camp would be very uncomfortable and miserable. Such camps where Salva was living, have shortage of food and water, overcrowding, and inadequate facilities.

f. Can you list at least three traits you like about Salva? Explain.

Salva's character tells that he was a resilient, courageous and relentless boy. Despite of facing a lot of challenges and hardships, Salva's inspiring story of resilience and freedom tells us that how he overcome all those challenges and finally met his family. Moreover nothing stopped him, instead he started doing great works for the betterment of people of Sudan. 

g. Do you think the story would have ended differently, if it happened in 2020?

Yes, if the story happened in 2020, it would ended differently.  I think people like Salva Dut would easily contact their family with the help of modern technology of telecommunications and transport facilities. People will face less sufferings. On the other hand, Nya had not to go miles away to bring water and she would get good education.
